Hei kaikki!

The last Finnish film of the year is a beautiful film directed by Klaus Härö. Tervetuloa!

Letters to Father Jacob (Postia pappi Jaakobille)

Letter’s to Father Jacob (2009) tells the story of pastor Jacob and a pardoned convict Leila. Left with few options, Leila agrees to work as a personal assistant for Jacob, who is blind. Her main duty is to read him letters where people ask him for help. Answering the letters has become the most rewarding aspect of Jacob’s life, whereas Leila is not interested in religious matters and finds the whole business worthless. But then the letters stop coming, and Leila finds herself cast in an unexpected role. The film was well received by critics and audiences in Finland and abroad. 1 h 12 min.

UC Berkeley Finnish Film Night "Hella W" Tomorrow Night at 6 p.m.

Finnish film night

Tuesday, October 9, 2012
Hella W
Hella W (2011) is based on the true story of playwright, politician and businesswoman Hella Wuolijoki (1886-1954). In what was still very much a man’s world, Wuolijoki managed to write successful plays and create a thriving business. Wuolijoki was also very active politically, promoting left-wing ideas. She had connections to the Soviet Union, which made the Finnish authorities increasingly suspicious – especially after the beginning of the Finnish Continuation War in 1941. While following the life of this exceptional woman, the film also touches on key moments in Finnish history from the independence to the 1940s.
Here is a link to the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MHFXL59N0k
The film will be shown on UCB campus, in
Dwinelle Hall, room B4, at 6 pm on Tuesday, October 9th.

SPORTS SO FAR : August Siitonen Sports Report... Olympic-Bound!

AUGUST FAR SPORTS

The Finnish sports talk during July has been mostly about who’s going to the Olympics in London and how come Finland got only a bronze medal in a truncated European Athletics Championships held this year at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki in early July..

Ari Mannio, Antti Ruuskanen and Teemu Wirkkala were in good position to represent Finland at the European Championships in the javelin in Helsinki. To give former world champ Tero Pitkämäki a chance to snap out of his doldrums and show good stuff, it was decided to hold off picking the team until after the annual Javelin Carnival at Pihtipudas on June 17. Pitkämäki won that with his best throw of the season of 83.87, so he, Ruuskanen (84.95m the longest Finnish season’s mark, and Ari Mannio were named to the team. But , alas, Ruuskanen came down with a fever so Wirkkala, with a problem ankle, was named to replace him.

So in the qualifying Euro round on June 27 at the Olympic Stadium, both Mannio with his season’s
best of 84.31and Pitkämäki with 80.06 made the final. Wirkkala with ankle trouble got no mark. Then
in the final, Pitkämäki went back into his old slump by trying too hard and scored a miserable 74.89 for 11th place. Vitezslav Vasely of the Czech Republic won it with a modest 83.75 and the silver went to unheralded young Russian Valeri Jardin with 83..25. Mannio got the bronze and the only Finnish medal in the Games with 82.63. (How much Ari must have wished he’d switch the length of his qualifying throw with his result in the final. He would have been European champion!)

Finland just missed the hardware in the men’s 1500m run, when Swede-Finn Niclas Sandells, who had won his heat in the qualifiers and was a favorite to take the final, was pushed and tripped by a Turkish runner when Sandells was in the lead pack on a late race turn and was sent sprawling to ruin his best shot. The Turk was at first disqualified but on appeal this was overturned as unintentional. Norway’s Henrik Ingbretsen was the winner in 3:41.20, the slowest European championship time in 62 years! Roni Ollikainen earned a respectable 6th place in men’s long jump for two championship points with a personal best of 805 cms. 20005 World Bronze medalist Tommi Evilä had qualified for the final with an 801 but fell far back in the final. So that’s all she wrote for Finland in these games.

So who’s going to throw the spear for the Finns at the Olympic Games in London which should
be happening when you receive your August FAR? Well, that was decided at the Lapinlahti Elite
Games on July 8. Tero Pitkämäki got his act together and won the javelin in 81.70, so a day later the
Finnish Olympic Committee decided to give him another shot, to accompany Mannio and Ruuskanen
to Londontown. Others who got the Oly nod at Lapinlahti were another Swede-Finn Sandra Eriksson
who made the B Standard with her 3000m steeplechase result in a PB of 9:43.38 and the unlucky Euro contender Niclas Sandells whe ran the men’s 1500m in a PB showing of 3:36.38, which time would have easily won him a gold at the European Championships had the freak accident not happened.

Other track & field contenders at London who we haven’t mentioned previously in FAR include
Jere Bergius (pole vault), Jonathan Astrand (200m), Osku Torro (high jump), Minna Nikkanen (pole vault), Sanni Utriainen (javelin), and Anne Halkivaha (20K racewalk). In other sports Olympians include: Jaana Sundberg (52Kg judo), Matti Kettunen (60Kg Greco-roman wrestling), Jussi Veikkanen (bicycling), Pia Sundstedt (who just won the Euro mountain bike title), Jarkko Nieminen (tennis), and former world champ Hanna-Maria Seppälä, Emilia Pikkarainen, Noora Laukkanen, Jenna Laukkanen, Ari-Pekka Liukkonen, Matti Mattsson (swimming). Jenna Laukkanen has just set a Finnish record of 2:26.39

Olympics-bound 50K racewalker Jarkko Kinnunen (along with Antti Kempas), set a new 10,000m
personal best of 39:59.09 at Kauhava on July 8, the second fastest track time in Finnish walking history. The record is still held by former 50K world champion Valentin Kononen of 39:23.39 in 1995. The 10K road equivalent of 38:59 was set a few weeks back by Veli-Matti (Aku) Partanen.

Now last and least, out here in California, your trusty scribe took golds in the javelin and softball throw and silvers in the shot and discus at the Western States International Invitational at Davis in the men’s 85-89-year age group. An accomplished 85y.o. virtuoso from Reno was the first man his age I’ve ever seen use the modern rotary-style shot put throw to win. If I’d tried that classy spin, I’d have broken off both legs at the knees. One more meet coming up this year at Chabot College in Hayward on July 22 where I’ve registered for the shot, jav, discus and 200m.

A Radical Finn for Vice President!

The Green Party has chosen MD Jill Stein as Presidential candidate and Cheri Honkala, a tireless anti-poverty advocate as Vice Presidential candidate Cheri is of Finnish-American descent, originally from Minnsota but for many years a courageous and effective organizer for the homeless and 99 per cent in Philadelphia. I'm proud to see this principled fellow Finn taking her campaign to the country in this election, to speak the truth rather than the usiual major party blarney.  See the You-Tubes connected with the attached story.

FILM: The Greater Circulation ($10) directed by Antero Alli (in attendance) showing Weds, 6/27 @ 7:30 p.m. in downtown Oakland (based on Rilke's "Requiem For a Friend")

Vertical Pool presents a rare screening of
"THE GREATER CIRCULATION"
A Film by Antero Alli (2005; 93 min. USA)
Based on poet Rainer Maria Rilke's "Requiem For a Friend"
(as translated from the German by Stephen Mitchell)

Wednesday June 27th, 7:30pm
Humanist Hall, 390 27th St (near Broadway) Oakland
$10. admission.  Filmmaker in person.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES
I have been living with poet Rainer Maria Rilke's epic lament,"REQUIEM FOR A FRIEND," on and off since 1990 when I first staged it as a narrative for a performance ritual in Seattle. Fourteen years later, I wrote a screenplay incorporating the entire text of "Requiem" within a story about Rilke writing it over three fever-dream nights in a Paris hotel room and how one hundred years later, three women prepare to perform it as avante garde experimental theatre. In the completed film, "The Greater Circulation," the final twenty minutes features the live performance by these women incorporating 'paratheatre' techniques and processes.

Rilke wrote "Requiem" as a tribute to his close friend, the artist Paula Modersohn-Becker, who unexpectedly died eighteen days after birthing her first child. “The Greater Circulation” is a cinematic treatment of Rilke’s prose addressing the central drama of all women torn between sacrificing their lives to their Art or to Motherhood. "The Greater Circulation"
celebrates the visual and theatrical expression of  Rilke's epic lament and can be especially appreciated by those familiar with his prose and poetry.

At this writing, the World Men’s Hockey Championships have just gotten underway. in Helsinki and Stockholm. Defending champion Finland had a couple of worrisome starts, defeating Slovakia and Belarus by 1-0 scores. Great on defense but with top teams looming ahead they need a more vigorous offense. Fortunately, in their third game Finland dumped Switzerland, 5-2. Here in North America the Stanley Cup playoffs are well underway. Stay tuned. .

One of Finland’s premier fiddlers, Arto Järvelä has, over the past three decades, been a member of more than ten folk music groups. He's primarily known as founder, second fiddler, composer and arranger of Kaustinen fiddle legends JPP, in action since 1982. Throughout the JPP history, Arto has demonstrated profound talents as a remarkably skilled player and as a gifted composer and multi-instrumentalist.

Arto began his studies at Sibelius Academy Folk Music department and graduated in 1994 as Master of Music. During his studies he adapted new instruments like nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle), mandolin, octave mandolin, kantele and has been seen jamming even with jouhikko (ancient finnish bowed lyre), double bass and brushes!

Finnish-American musicians Sara Pajunen and Jonathan Rundman of the folk duo KAIVAMA grew up in Northwoods cultures of long winters, lakeside saunas, rugged terrain, and solitude. The landscapes of their childhoods echo in the music of their debut album, release in June 2011. Alternately ancient and modern Finnish influences reveal themselves in KAIVAMA's sound: danceable rhythms, joyous melodies, icy whispers, sleek construction, primal drones, and poppy hooks all interplay as Pajunen and Rundman explore the music of their ancestors and create a bridge between a new Finnish-American generation and the time-honored music of their heritage.

Immediately upon KAIVAMA’s first public appearance, word of the young Minneapolis-based neo-traditionalists reverberated throughout Finnish communities in America and the band began receiving invitations to perform nationwide. Finland’s YLE public radio network requested early KAIVAMA demo recordings for airplay. Audience-member videos of their performances were featured on America’s only Finnish-language TV show, Suomi Kutsuu on WLUC TV6 in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The duo had tapped into an unforeseen demand for fresh, energetic music rooted in the Finnish-American experience.

Finnish run-walkers set new record!

SPORTS UPDATE

Veli-Matti (Aku) Partanen, 20, set a new Finnish men's 10K national racewalk record of 38 minutes 59 seconds in a road race at the 25th Annual Taabori Olympic Walks at Hyrylä, Finland on April 14. In so doing, he broke World 50K Champion Valentin Kononen's old record by 21 seconds. He also improved on his own Finnish junior record by 1:08 minutes It's also the stand-alone 10K fastest time walked in the world this year, although several walkers have walked faster 10K as a split in 20K races. Coached by his father, Kai Paratnen, Aku is attempting to q1ualify for the 20K in the London Olympics.

In the women's 20K, Anne Halkivaha walkee the fourth fastest Finnish women's 10K time ever with a PB of 46:35, a two minute improvement. Now being coached by Reima Salonen, a 1981 European 50K Champ and an Olympian, his counsel is obviously making a big difference in Anne's results. Only Mirva Hämäläinen in the 80s, Sari Essayah in the 90s and Marja Penttinen in the 2000s have walked faster women's 10Ks in Finlnad. Junior class siosers Henrika and Erika Parviainen were 2nd and 3rd with PRs of 50:29 and 50:52. Aleksi Ojala, another young walker being coached by Salonen, walked a 1:29:16 20K for 1st place, with Eemeli Kiiski 2n with 1:29:41, also a first time under 1:30.

RESULTS:

Men:s 20K: 1. Aleksi Ojala/1:29:16/PB. 2, Eemeli Kiiski/1:29:41/PB. 3. Timo Viljanen/1:334:37. 4. Heikki Lahtinen/65/1:56:50 (Masters Age-graded 1:32:45).
MEN's 10K: Aku Partanen/20/38:59/NR aND JrAge22NR (Val Kononen's old record 39:20--1999). 2. Markus Kyrölä/16/48:34. 3. Joni Rouhiainen/52:11.

Women's 10K: 1. Anne Halkivaha/46:35/PR. 2. Henrika Parviainen,/14/50?29/PB. 3. Erika Parviainen/16/50:42/PB. 4. Annika Norman/53:14. 5. Tiia Kuikka/53:58.

The author's meticulous research and vivid portrayal of the key players in the drama - Jean Sibelius, Robert Karanus, Axel Gallen-Kallela and others - makes the book almost read like a novel."

FAR SPORTS For MARCH ISSUE 2112:
The Finnish Sports Editors’ Association awarded World Women’s Biathlon champion Kaisa Mäkäräinen its annual award of Top Finnish Athlete of the Year for 2011 in January. She received 3,205 votes, including 151 first place votes. Cross-country skier Matti Heikkinen was second with 2,453 (121) and the Finnish Men’s National Hockey team won 3rd, 1,578 (48). It was the third year in a row that a woman won the top athlete’s award. For 2010 it was Orienteer Minna Kauppi and in 2009 cross-country skier Aino-Kaisa Saarinen
Finnish sports fans were shocked in January to hear of the death of Enduro world champ Mika Ahola, 37, who died in a Barcelona hospital from surgery following a fall in December. On New Year’s Eve he had announced his retirement from this sport. Riding for the Italian team H.M. Moto, he had won five consecutive world championships in this demanding discipline. Enduro is an off-road motorcycle sport which involves many dilemmas and obstacles. It’s also a time-keeping sport in which the rider needs to arrive at certain interval points at specific time and is penalized points for early or late arrivals.
On the good news side, veteran Finnish tennis star Jarkko Niemiein, 31, won only his second career ATP singles title when he whipped France’s Julien Benneteau (ATP 49) , 6-2, 7-5. in the final of the Sydeny Open Jan. 15. At the time Nieminen held ATP rank 77, and had to play two qualifying rounds before being even allowed to play in the Open. Sydney was a field day for wild cards as all top-ranked seeds were eliminated in the earlier rounds,. Nieminen’s main scalp was highly –ranked Czech Radek Stepanek in the second round, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7, 6-1, who had defeated the Finn at Brisbane the week before. Nieminen’s previous ATP singles win was in Auckland, NZ in 2006. Jarkko and his doubles partner Matthew Elden of Australia also clawed their way to the doubles final at Sydney, before being deposed by the best doubles team in the world, USA’s Bryan twins, Bob and Mike. All this left Nieminen so bushed he was unable to get past the first round in the Australian Open Grand Slam a couple On the boxing front, Juho Haapoja maintained his European Union light-heavyweight crown by decisioning Ireland’s Ian Toms before 2500 fans at Seinäjoki on Jan. 20, The “Härmän Häjy’s´ points: 116-112, 2115-113, 115-113. While we’re on figure skating, Finnish national champion Kiira Korpi is burnishing a silver from the European Women’s Championships that concluded in Sheffield, England on Jan. 28. She finished second to Carolina Kostner of Italy who had 183.55 points to Kiira’s 166.94. Georgia’s Elena Gedevanishvili was 3rd with 165.83. In the short program Kiira was close to Carolina, 63,2 to 61,80. In the short program Korpi’s music was Ladt Gaga’s “You and I”. In the free skate it was George Gershwin’s “I Gor Rhythm”
Tanja Poutiainen was second in the World Cup slalom at Kranjska Gora, 0.85 seconds begind Michaela Kirchgasser of Austria on Jan. 22. In the X-Games At Aspen, Colo., snowboarder Enni Rajajärvi was second behind USA’s Jenny Anderson in the slope-style 82.61-95.33., an event Enni won last year. Peetu Piiroinen got the bronze in the men’s slope-style snowboard. In a World Cup cross-country ski sprint at Moscow on Feb. 2, the winner was Cup leader Justyna Kowalczyk of Poland, with Finns Aino-Kaisa Saarinen and Krista Lähteenmäki in fourth and fifth . On Feb. 5 in Innsbruck, snowboartder Peetu Piiroinen dominatedin a six-star Big Air jump, while Markus Malin and Janne Korpi were second and third in Calgary to a snowboard win by Ryo Anono of Japan.
Back in Finland in the national winter indoor multi-event track championships at Bonia Hall at Mustajärvi. long–time pentathlon champion Niina Kelo was upset by Miia Kurppa, eight years her junior, on Feb. 5. Kurppa opened her charge with an 8.71-sec personal best in the 60m hurdles and another PB 170 cms in the high jump. Niina came back with a powerful 14.61 thrust in the shotput, but Miia took the long jump with 6 meters and the 800m run in a new course record of 2:26.04. Thus, in a close call in points it was 4044 for Miia, 4032 for Niina. Tero Ojala took the men’s heptathlon with 5360 points..
