Finnish run-walkers set new record!

SPORTS UPDATE

Veli-Matti (Aku) Partanen, 20, set a new Finnish men's 10K national racewalk record of 38 minutes 59 seconds in a road race at the 25th Annual Taabori Olympic Walks at Hyrylä, Finland on April 14. In so doing, he broke World 50K Champion Valentin Kononen's old record by 21 seconds. He also improved on his own Finnish junior record by 1:08 minutes It's also the stand-alone 10K fastest time walked in the world this year, although several walkers have walked faster 10K as a split in 20K races. Coached by his father, Kai Paratnen, Aku is attempting to q1ualify for the 20K in the London Olympics.

In the women's 20K, Anne Halkivaha walkee the fourth fastest Finnish women's 10K time ever with a PB of 46:35, a two minute improvement. Now being coached by Reima Salonen, a 1981 European 50K Champ and an Olympian, his counsel is obviously making a big difference in Anne's results. Only Mirva Hämäläinen in the 80s, Sari Essayah in the 90s and Marja Penttinen in the 2000s have walked faster women's 10Ks in Finlnad. Junior class siosers Henrika and Erika Parviainen were 2nd and 3rd with PRs of 50:29 and 50:52. Aleksi Ojala, another young walker being coached by Salonen, walked a 1:29:16 20K for 1st place, with Eemeli Kiiski 2n with 1:29:41, also a first time under 1:30.

RESULTS:

Men:s 20K: 1. Aleksi Ojala/1:29:16/PB. 2, Eemeli Kiiski/1:29:41/PB. 3. Timo Viljanen/1:334:37. 4. Heikki Lahtinen/65/1:56:50 (Masters Age-graded 1:32:45).
MEN's 10K: Aku Partanen/20/38:59/NR aND JrAge22NR (Val Kononen's old record 39:20--1999). 2. Markus Kyrölä/16/48:34. 3. Joni Rouhiainen/52:11.

Women's 10K: 1. Anne Halkivaha/46:35/PR. 2. Henrika Parviainen,/14/50?29/PB. 3. Erika Parviainen/16/50:42/PB. 4. Annika Norman/53:14. 5. Tiia Kuikka/53:58.

The author's meticulous research and vivid portrayal of the key players in the drama - Jean Sibelius, Robert Karanus, Axel Gallen-Kallela and others - makes the book almost read like a novel."
