Hella
W
Hella W (2011)
is based on the true story of playwright,
politician and businesswoman Hella Wuolijoki (1886-1954).
In what was still
very much a man’s world, Wuolijoki managed to write
successful plays and create
a thriving business. Wuolijoki was also very active
politically, promoting
left-wing ideas. She had connections to the Soviet Union,
which made the
Finnish authorities increasingly suspicious – especially
after the beginning of
the Finnish Continuation War in 1941. While following the
life of this exceptional
woman, the film also touches on key moments in Finnish
history from the independence
to the 1940s.

Tuesday, October 9th.
It
is free, open to everyone, and
subtitled in
English.
